SZIU at 7th CASEE Conference

CASEE (, the  Central and South Eastern European  network of ICA (Interfaculty Committee Agraria, had its 7th conference organized by Banat’s University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine ‘’King Michael I of Romania’’ in Timisoara (USAMVBT) between 22-24 May. The network of higher education institutions relating to life sciences (agriculture, food, biotechnology, natural resources, rural development and the environment) aims to stimulate and support the development of its member institutions in Europe and globally as well. One of CASEE’s main objectives is to support joint educational, research and other programmes, for example joint master degrees, joint quality assurance, knowledge transfer etc. The network places a special emphasis on implementing the EU Strategy for the Danube Region therefore joint projects related to it are also brought to the fore.

These priorities formed the basis of Danube AgriFood Master Programme (DAFM), which is the international joint degree programme of five universities, namely University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), Szent István University (SZIU), University of Zagreb (UNIZG), University of Novi Sad (UNS) and USAMVBT. This year SZIU has applied for support for DAFM from the European Commission’ s Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees  Programme; Dr. Zsuzsanna Tarr, who drew up the application, gave a presentation on it in CASEE General Assembly.

CASEE-In (, an other joint project funded by the Austrian National Agency (OeAD) was also the outcome of CASEE network cooperation among BOKU, SZIU, UNIZG, USAMVBT and State Agrarian University of Moldova (UASM). CASEE-In focuses on the internationalization of higher education, in particular interdisciplinary and intercultural aspects. As a work package of CASEE-In project, SZIU’s International Relations Office started an e-learning course titled Introduction to Scientific Communication in the second semester of 2015/2016. 25 students from the participating universities enrolled in the course that was closed by a real-life activity: participating in 7th CASEE Conference in Timisoara and make use of the knowledge they acquired during the course.

The topic of 7th CASEE Conference was the role of Life Sciences in Europe’s 2020 Strategy. SZIU was represented by Dr. István Szabó, Vice-Rector for International Relations and Treasurer of CASEE and Dr. Zsuzsanna Tarr, Head of International Relations Office. Furthermore, two DAFM exchange students from BOKU currently studying at SZIU Kamon Rompoonpol and Eric John Florida, and six SZIU students majoring in Agricultural Engineering master course were present, namely Ahmad Samir Azimi, Amias Ampurire Aryampa, Owino Angela Mbeke, Mustapha Abdulkadir, Okereke Chikodinaka Nkechinyere and Virág Nagypál. Virág Nagypál gave a poster presentation as well in Section Primary Production and Regional Development.
