HISTRORY OF THE INSTITUTE

At the recommendation of the European Council, with American support, and as an affiliated department of the Medical School at the University of Debrecen, a nursing degree programme started in the town of Gyula in 1993. The town provided beneficial possibilities for the health care programmes at college level, since there was the appropriate educational building and one of the largest and oldest hospitals in Hungary could be found there where various medical vocational trainings had been proceeding for decades.

Due to the success of the nursing degree programme the university planned to enlarge the department with new degree subjects and new buildings. However, the cumpulsary integration starting at the end of the 1990s propelled the management of the university to dissolution instead of development.

The Pándy Kálmán County Hospital and the management of the town, however, did not accept the dissolution of the successful institute; they sought the possibility of survival and development within the framework of the Tessedik Sámuel College, newly-organised in 2000.

On account of the successful developments of recent years and the efficient utilisation of the possibilities inherent in the integrated college, the department has become a modern, well-equipped institute, directing several basic degree subjects and degree subject lines.

It has a unique role in the creation of the Hungarian health tourism education; and as a result of planned developments, a mutual Hungarian-Romanian-Serbian Health-Industrial Science Centre is being formed.

In this complex multidisciplinary programme, the mutual developmental possibilities with the faculties of the Szent István University gain a prominent role.

Nursing and Health Care basic degree subject, Nursing degree subject line

The educational programme prepares students for various services (e.g., health care, prophylaxis, rehabilitation, etc.) in the transforming public health system. It enables them to obtain one of the most highly sought after qualifications in Europe.

Nursing and Health Care basic degree subject, Dietetics degree subject line

Good nutrition is part of a health-conscious attitude. The dietetics degree subject line trains special experts in the developments in the field of dietary science to improve quality of life for patients. There are especially great possibilities for them to find a situation in hospitals, in catering trade and in public catering.

Welfare Worker basic degree subject

The programme consisting of six educational and one practical semester trains experts in the new social supply system aiming at serving the raising the standard of living and providing assistance to the less fortunate in economic-societal transformation.

Sanitary Management degree subject, Health Tourism Management degree subject line

The unique degree programme started in the town of Gyula in 2006 as one of the first such programmes in Europe to train experts in the developing health industry and salutary tourism for the integration into a network of various new services (e.g., holistic medicine, wellness, fitness, hydrotherapy) and their marketing.

The experts possessing the new knowledge gain a key-role in the development and management of the modern market sanitary and business insurance systems.

WHY IS IT WORTH BEING A STUDENT IN GYULA?

Gyula is one of the most beautiful small towns in Hungary In the next couple of years development will begin of an international health resort relying upon the famous spa and the high-standard hospital background. In this programme there will be need for every graduate student of ours irrespective of their degree subject.

The chance is greater to get admittance to familiar-atmosphere degree programmes than to renowned "knowledge factories" educating tens of thousands of students.

Students of the university have better chances to gain admittance to MA courses at their own university than to the same courses at other universities.
