HISTORY AND MISSION
Higher education in Békéscsaba started in 1986. In 1994 the first economics degree programme in Finance and Accounting, which plays a key role in the faculty's current profile, was launched. In 2001, Tessedik Sámuel College was founded as a result of the merger of several institutions of higher education in the region. In 2006 the faculty aligned its course structure in accordance with the Bologna process. Besides degree programmes, a wide range of non-degree and post-graduate programmes are being developed in response to labour market demands.
Recently the Faculty of Economics has merged with Szent István University and become one of its faculties.
The Faculty of Economics in Bekescsaba strives to produce graduates who have received a practical education with a strong emphasis on problem-solving. Another priority is for students to possess a high level of communication and foreign language skills. As part of our graduate programmes we provide a wide range of options for specialization and full-time students also have an opportunity to take up extra foreign language courses.
Our faculty is located in a region which is disadvantaged in terms of unemployment rates and the proportion of university graduates in the work force. For this reason our faculty strives to satisfy the growing needs of graduates who have received practice-oriented education. Therefore we invite local experts and business professionals to take part in the teaching of courses like Law, Banking, Insurance, Taxation, Controlling, and Social Security. The programmes taught at our faculty have earned high respect in the region, which is demonstrated by the growing demand for our courses. Most recently we received a request to provide training to the Békés County Regional Development Agency.
Our graduates are well received in the labour market: they are often offered jobs at businesses and institutions where they spend their practical placements.
INTERNATIONAL LINKS AND LANGUAGE STUDIES
Besides teaching, the staff at the Faculty of Economics is engaged in numerous research projects, which are in harmony with the research and development strategies of the county and the wider region. The research activities are primarily focused on social and economic issues in a disadvantaged region (South-East Hungary).
The faculty has been active in editing two periodicals: one local (Körös Tanulmányok), and one international (Perspective). In the latter journal, articles by colleagues from Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) and Arad (Romania) are also published regularly.
The faculty has international connections which encompass several types of joint activities and cooperations. We organise international links which provide our staff and students with opportunities for international mobility under the Erasmus scheme and for participation in other EU projects.
Participation in Erasmus and in other Lifelong Learning programmes enables our students to spend one or two semesters of their studies in one of our partner universities in Europe, such as Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic or Poland. The semesters abroad are integral and fully acknowledged parts of the students' studies which help them to gain valuable educational and cultural experiences in other countries and to improve their foreign language skills. All of this constitutes substantial added value and a tangible advantage when the students enter the labour market upon graduation. Most recently the Erasmus scheme also supports practical placements abroad, which is another opportunity for our students to enhance their skills. Our transatlantic partner is Murray State University in the USA, which receives our students for single semester exchanges.
The faculty is engaged in international research projects with our strategic partner, the University of West Vasile Goldis in Arad, mainly to improve competencies for employability in the border region and to develop joint Hungarian-Romanian business centres and databases. The Faculty also has links with several universities from the Visegrad countries, of which the closest is the one with Matthew Bel University in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia. Another recent successful project has been a 2-year Grundtvig project with universities in the UK and Romania developing ideas for courses addressing inter-cultural dialogue.
Our Faculty is an accredited language examination site. Thanks to the exam site, our students have the opportunity to take their required language examinations locally: Origo general language exams in English, German, French, Romanian and Slovakian languages, or Zöld Út specialised language exams in Economics, Agriculture and Technology in English and German, on elementary (B1), intermediate (B2) and advanced (C1) levels. We also have a modern language laboratory to assist our students in their preparations for the language exams.
MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE
In the past two years significant improvements have been made to the infrastructure of the faculty. A new building was added, which houses the Main Lecture Hall which seats 325 people, as well as a modern, well-equipped library. The library has 70,000 books and 60 new computer terminals to assist the students in their studies. In our main building there are also two open-access computer rooms and free wireless Internet access for our students.
Our student residence halls have also been renovated and extended recently, which provide all students accommodation in 2 or 2x2 bed apartments with Internet access. In the building of the student halls there is also a conference room for 40 people, TV-rooms with plasma TV's and free sunbeds.
The faculty also has a sports hall which is suitable for housing sporting events, training camps, expos, exhibitions, concerts, cultural and social events, balls, receptions, etc. Thanks to continuous developments we can also offer more specialized classes in aerobics and kung-fu, besides traditional sports activities. In 2008 the sports hall was expanded with a warm-up area and a fully equipped gym.
All these facilities together with the student-friendly, familiar atmosphere that our school provides make it a comfortable and pleasant environment in which students can complete their studies.
