In 2008 the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, which bears the name of Miklós Ybl, the most famous Hungarian architect of the 19th century, began its 130th academic year. For more than a century, the spirit of the school has been determined by the principles of the founders and its excellent teachers, and this time-honoured institution trains students as architects, civil engineers and construction managers. The high standards of teaching are confirmed by the fact that for decades far more students have been applying for a place at our university than can be accepted, and because of this fact only students with excellent qualifications can take up their studies here.

MASTERING THE NEW CHALLENGES

Lifelong Learning

An important step in developing the training within our faculty has been the creation and introduction of the credit system, which now meets the requirements of the 21st century. Meeting the requirements of the integrated European Higher Education system has been an important challenge to our faculty, as well as the implementation of an educational system consisting of the three stages (Bachelor's, Master's and PhD) which are specified by the Declaration of Bologna.

Educational reorientation based on the "Bologna System" has had a positive impact. One such change has been the extension of courses from six to eight semesters.

The Hungarian Accreditation Board has accepted the documents submitted for establishing all three Bachelor´s programmes:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Architecture

  • Construction Management.

After the accreditation of our Bachelor's programmes and having received permission to establish them at Ybl, the courses were started and we are now taking steps to establish the Master´s programmes. We are planning to go ahead with the Master´s programmes either independently or by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by integration on a medium-term basis with other faculties. Work on the Master´s degree courses for architectural designers is already in progress. Furthermore we are planning to establish a Master´s programme for Fire Safety and Disaster Management, as well as a course of study for master builders.

In addition, using the potential provided by the university, one of our long-term plans is to launch a PhD programme within the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Engineering.

Since we have endeavoured to preserve our traditions and intellectual values, we believe that we are in an excellent position to do this.

The demands of lifelong learning and a quickly-changing world make it essential for engineers who qualified some time back to update both their practical and theoretical knowledge.

At our faculty, professional training is available in:

  • Public Utilities Maintenance

  • Environmental Management

  • Master Building

  • Technical Supervision

  • Fire Safety

Academic flexibility in regards to study, teaching and scientific research, coupled with a desire for excellence, are of prime importance to us and our students.

The increasing number of students, together with very positive feedback from the industry and from market research, confirm the fact that our graduate engineers are much in demand both in Hungary and abroad.
