History
The Szent Istvan University, Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences can trace its roots back to 1920 with the foundation of the Agricultural Department within the Budapest University of Sciences. This department later became part of the School of Economic Sciences at Józef Nádor Technical University, Budapest. In 1945, the University of Agricultural Sciences came into existence and moved to Gödöllő in 1950.
As a result of improvement and expansion on the fields of training, research and extension services, the official name of school was changed to The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the turn of the millennium with the establishment of Szent Istvan University by the merger of four formerly independent schools.
Mission
The mission of the faculty is to train environmentally and human oriented experts in fields relating to food industry and environmental conservation. It is necessary for the experts of tomorrow to acknowledge the need for sustainability and quality in the fields of crop production, animal breeding, game management and fish breeding, horticulture and agricultural biotechnology. Also, one must take into account the impact of mankind on our natural surroundings. For this reason the faculty places an emphasis on training professionals in the fields of nature conservation, environmental management, environmental engineering and soil sciences with a vision of the future which includes a healthy balance between man and his surroundings.
Taking advantage of the national way of thinking and the aggregated knowledge and tradition, our aim is to educate competitive engineers who meet the requirements and challenges of the European Union. Our graduates are able to carry out and coordinate spatial and rural development and agricultural and environmental management tasks both in theory and in practice. They are also capable of taking care of natural and artificial landscapes and the inherited sustainable environment.
The most important objective is to prepare our graduates to cope with the rigorous demands of professional life and to meet the needs of both industry and the environment. We strive to provide a positive learning environment where our students learn to appreciate the need for humans to work together in meeting both short term and long term goals in sustainability for both mankind and the environment. The faculty helps graduates meet these goals by providing an up-to-date education, together with research, joint development of production and processing, with an understanding of economy, infrastructure and the surrounding environment. It is this interdisciplinary approach which makes the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Szent Istvan University a respected leader in agricultural and environmental education both within Hungary and the greater European Union.
